Viljandi Guitar Festival pays heed to other instruments relative to guitar. This year it will be pipa. Lan Weiwei’s career as a pipa player spans more than 20 years and is considered one of the best pipa players in the world. Since the beginning of her stage career she has had the gaol of introduceing traditional Chinese music to the Western world. In addition to that she likes to perform modern music – solo pieces, ensemble music and concertos with symphony orchestras. Pipa is a Chinese instrument belonging to the plucked category of instruments. The name "pípá" is made up of two Chinese syllables, "pí" and "pá", noting the two most common ways of playing this pear-shaped instrument and like long fingernails, plectrums are attached to the fingers to pluck the strings.
